Skiing and snowboarding in Laax

Alpine hotspot for riders

The ultra-cool ski resort of Laax is the favourite playground for snowboarders and freestylers from all over Europe. And rightly so. The resort offers exceptional facilities for this type of skiing and hosts international freestyle competitions that bring together professionals and amateurs alike. The village also has everything to please them: lively bars, concerts and chilled-out après-ski. Unlike some other kitschy Alpine resorts, the local scene is burgeoning with innovative design projects, in hospitality, gastronomy and in the development of the skiing infrastructure.

The ski area is also well suited to beginners thanks to its learning areas, its numerous blue runs and its freestyle academy that allows youngsters get started safely. The two other villages linked to the skiing area, Flims and Falera, are primarily aimed at spa and relaxation buffs.

Our review of the skiing area

Epic snowparks and freestyle

The Vorab glacier is the highest point of the ski area. Most of the slopes are above 2,000m and therefore enjoy a good snow cover throughout the high season. Here, no T-bars except on the glacier. You will find mostly state-of-the-art cable cars, gondolas and chairlifts.

Snowpark and freeride

The hub of the skiing area and the starting point for most riders is the Galaaxy at the top of Crap Sogn Gion. From there, you can access the huge freestyle area made up of four snow parks, including the largest half-pipe in Europe. Higher up, from the Vorab glacier, freeriders will have fun on the unprepared but secured slopes of the Vorab Pign.

Beginners

Between the Laax and Flims areas lies a vast plateau of blue slopes intermingled with unprepared stretches, that will delight those seeking a safe introduction to powder snow. The ski area is well suited to beginners and is a real favourite with parents, with two child cares and a ski school accessible to children aged 4 and up.

Intermediate and advanced skiers

Skiers fond of speed and carving experts will be disappointed, the inclinations of the slopes being overall too gentle. There are, however, some fine runs at La Siala, Mutta Rodunda, Grauberg and on the southern side of the Vorab.

How to get to Laax?

Location and access

Just a 25-minute drive from Chur, Laax is one of Switzerland’s major and most accessible swiss ski resorts from Zurich. The resort is located on a sunny plateau, facing south-east, overlooking the Rhine Gorges. The inhabitants now speak mostly Swiss German, but it is still possible to hear Rumantsch, a typical Romansh language in the region.

On the motorway from Chur, take the exit Reichenau, then follow Films or Laax. The ski resort can be reached in less than thirty minutes.

Flims or Laax, both villages have covered car parks with the same rates (20 frs for 12 hours and 28 frs for 24 hours). If you arrive early, you may be lucky enough to find cheaper outdoor parking spaces (between 5 and 10 frs per day).
